Migration of adhesives are several substances of interest, for example, following publication of the German magazine Ökotest or following international studies, or European experts. These include substances such as ITX, benzophenone, ESBO, SEM, phthalates, mineral oils, or melamine. However, bisphenol A is one of the most well known.
bisphenol A
The largest use of Bisphenol A is as raw material for polycarbonate, a shatterproof, transparent plastic, used in eg water bottles and baby bottles. In addition, it is widely used in epoxy coatings in metal packaging materials, especially beverage and food cans. The biggest problem is that the substance of the hormone estrogen seems and therefore has a potential effect on the endocrine system of the body, reproduction and the development of secondary sex characteristics.
adverse effects
But the list of potential adverse effects resulting from use of Bisphenol A is long; various types of cancer, impaired brain development, cardiovascular problems, diabetes, behavioral disorders, ADHD, obesity .... Meanwhile, the most diverse diseases are mentioned. There are already at least 1000 scientific publications on the harmful effects of bisphenol A. There is much research on how much we ingest bisphenol A from polycarbonate bottles and through the metal coatings. Also in many inks for printing, is bisphenol A.
baby Bottles
What does the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) and the US FDA, then? These and other leading organizations have in recent years the substance evaluated and re-ge-evaluated. The European Union remains still stand behind the established migration limit of 0.6 mg / kg. However, by March 1, 2011 the use of polycarbonate baby bottles banned. "BPA frei" has become a very common claim on baby bottles. But what is actually known about the safety of the materials that are used as an alternative? Moreover, Obama has also banned the use in baby bottles. Cosmetic surgery, because at that time there were no more polycarbonate baby bottles in the US market.
prohibition
But besides legislators also let consumer and environmental organizations, the media (I'm doing it now with participation) and the lobby of the chemical industry hear well. All in all, the discussion so polarized and there is so much information that it's hard to disentangle yet. In several European countries rumbling. The European position ignoring, has now adopted a law in France banning the use of bisphenol A for food contact materials completely by 2015. It is believed to be safe than sorry, because who knows what the future even more harmful effects of bisphenol A on come to light?
